THREE NEW TZADIKS!
STEVE COLEMAN - Invisible Paths - First Scattering: Solo
(Tzadik 7621; USA) One of the most accomplished and influential
saxophonists in the world in his first-ever solo recording. In the best
visionary tradition Steve Coleman has traveled the world from India to
Egypt in search of knowledge, truth and beauty. Drawing upon centuries
old traditions of numerology and mysticism, he has created a veritable
textbook of revolutionary musical concepts through the instrument whose
modern language he has helped to define. This is a long overdue intense
personal statement by one of the world's great musical seekers. TZADIK

NOAH CRESHEVSKY - To Know and Not to Know (Tzadik 8036; USA) A former
student of Boulanger and Berio, Noah Creshevsky has been creating
expressive and exhilarating electroacoustic compositions since 1971.
Using an extended, all-inclusive sound palette, Creshevsky deconstructs
familiar bits of words, songs and instrumentals, and reconstructs them
into striking new formal aggregates. This special Tzadik release
features a wide range of Creshevsky's utterly original sound world, and
includes several pieces for voice and electronics. Human yet
superhuman, real yet hyperreal, this is some of the most mind-bending
electronic music around. TZADIK COMPOSER SERIES

HA-YANG KIM - Ama (Tzadik 8037; USA) Born in Seoul and now a resident
of Brooklyn, Ha-Yang Kim is a cellist, composer and improviser who has
developed a unique language of extended string techniques and
electronics. Drawing upon influences as far ranging as Balinese and
Karnatic traditions, jazz, rock, western classical music and downtown
experimentation, she has created an original music of imagination and
passion. Her first CD features a startling solo piece, two pieces for
her long running duo project with percussionist Nathan Davis (Odd
Appetite) and a colorful ensemble piece for six players. TZADIK

LUNAR ENSEMBLE [formerly THE LUNAR BEAR ENSEMBLE] - Lunar Ensemble Live
/ Offbeat (MuWorks; USA) From around 1982 'til 1990, I wrote for a
(maga) zine called Jersey Beat. It was a free monthly publication and I
wrote about mostly bands & musicians from New Jersey, where I grew
up (in Linden) and still live (Rahway). I didn't get paid, but I did
enjoy getting & reviewing lots of promo records. Some of the early
singles that I got in the mail were from two bands from New Brunswick,
the Young Turks and Frozen Concentrate. I hadn't heard of either and
was knocked out by both, especially the Young Turks. The Young Turks
were one those amazing (but sadly under-recognized)
psych/rock/punk/poetry bands that I soon became close friends with.
Their third single was called "Shkoollastic Ambush" and it featured the
crazed poetry of John "Lunar" Richey fronting an intense power trio
with the scary noise/psych guitar and captivating whiney voice of Billy
Snow. I went to some great poetry readings in New Brunswick to check
out Lunar, as he soon had a duo called Lunar Bear with a percussionist
named Rich "Bear" Graham. The Young Turks evolved, adding more members,
recorded a great full-length album, which was never released and
eventually broke up. Perhaps DMG/ARC will release this lost gem one
day.
The fabulous Lunar Bear Ensemble also evolved and added members of
other bands from Brunswick-scene like Frozen Concentrate and Pleased
Youth. I recall a perfect early set they played at a festival I ran at
Modern Artists Studios in Rahway. They eventually became a powerful
sort of progressive art/rock sextet that included Martin Atkins, master
drummer from Public Image. They recorded their dynamic debut disc for
the MuWorks label in the mid-eighties and played a series of legendary
gigs at Maxwells & elsewhere. Martin Atkins later moved to Chicago
to join Killing Joke and put together Pigface and Murder Inc. Lunar has
had some of his great poetry published and does the occasional gig with
revolving members of the current Lunar Ensemble. They still play at DMG
Anniversary parties from time to time. Mr. Richey was also a founding
member Machine Gun, an incredible Livingston Jazz College all-star
jazz/rock/noise ensemble that featured the late, great Thomas Chapin on
sax and Bob Musso on lead guitar. The last drummer to play the Lunar
Ensemble was the mighty Lance Carter, who passed away last year. There
was an extraordinary Lance Carter Memorial Concert at the Knitting
Factory last month that opened with a stunning performance by another
all-star ensemble with members from the Lunar Ensemble, Machine Gun,
New Ghost, the Scorch Trio and Ween.
Which brings us to today, some two decades later and finally a second
disc by the legendary Lunar Ensemble, which is their name. For this
fabulous disc, the members of the Lunar Ensemble feature John "Lunar"
Richey - words, Slugger on lead guitar, Jack Petruzzelli on guitar
& keys, Andre Cholmondeley on guitar & effects (from Project
Object), Tom DiEllo on bass and Lance Carter on drums plus special
guest, Don Preston on Moog & effects. 'Offbeat' was recorded live
at the Court Tavern in New Brunswick, a favorite haunt of Rutgers area
bands for a many years. There is something about Lunar's voice that
makes me smile and feel at ease. His words are always wise, poetic,
very real, thoughtful, sarcastic yet never difficult or too oblique.
The Lunar Ensemble is/are a great improv/rock band that back Lunar with
a great groove and two or three inventive guitarists creating riveting
textures and occasional solos. This was true of their earlier recorded
gem for MuWorks (which is long out-of-print), live gigs and is still
the case with the current version of the band found here.
Their old classic "Bleeding Liberal" is redone here and still rings
true , the beat is slammin' and the guitars still hypnotic. On "Meteors
I & II", Andre, Sluggo and Don Preston, weave cosmic waves with
their guitars and synth. Lunar's words create two worlds superimposed
over one another: one, where the heavenly bodies hang in the heavens
and the other where we watch the heaven bodies of our mortal comrades
connect. Although the inner notes only list four tracks, there are
actually twice as many. The band gets a chance to cut loose and jam on
some steaming grooves on the other four tracks with some molten guitars
and uplifting rhythm teamwork as Lunar continues to paint the sad
realities of our and his difficult world/life. The last four parts make
up one long and winding story, the groove evolves organically as Lunar
takes us through scenery and a long, tortured, life-like journey. In
this pre-packaged modern world, where few folks read books and most
just watch TV, read the bad news in a newspaper and communicate via
e-mail and cell-phones, storytelling has become a long art form. John
Richey and the Lunar Ensemble do a fine job of captivating us with
their version of a modern tale and create the scenery to match the
images described within. Welcome back Lunar, you and your fine crew did
it again!- BLG

TRIO DEROME GUIBEAULT TANGUAY [JEAN DEROME/NORMAND GUILBEAULT /PIERRE
TANGUAY] - Etymologie: Live at L'Off Festival de Jazz de Montreal 2006
[DVD] (AM JZ 166; Canada) A cult Montreal jazz band, Trio Derome
Guilbeault Tanguay is loved for its irresistible swing, audacity,
sophisticated group playing, highly original repertoire and authentic
style. All these elements are the result of a vast comprehension of the
history of jazz, not to mention a vigorous proposition as to its
reinvention. Recorded at the historic Lion d'Or in front of a full
house on June 29, 2006, this performance is a living embodiment of the
ongoing musical conversation among three great friends - and great
artists. Their playing is imbued with the essential spirit of jazz
modernism, featuring group interplay of the highest order. - Mike
Chamberlain, April 2007

JOHN CAGE/PHILIPP VANDRE - Vol. 37: Piano Works 8: Complete Short Works
for Prepared Piano [2 CD set] (mode 180/181; USA) Philipp Vandre,
prepared piano. The complete short prepared piano works collected on
2-CDs. John Cage's works for prepared piano expose his earliest
experimentations in finding new and exotic sounds.
Brief and attractive, they are among his most accessible work. This
release marks the first time all of his short works for prepared piano
have been made available in one set. All the prepared piano works are
included aside from the magnum opus, Sonatas and Interludes. Pianist
Philipp Vandre has recorded Sonatas and Interludes for Mode (mode 50)
to great critical acclaim, including the recommended performance of the
piece from Gramophone Magazine.
Liner notes by Cage scholar James Pritchett.

GE GAN-RU - Lost Style (New Albion 134; USA) "These three pieces
deliver in the clearest manner the extraordinary compositional voice of
Ge Gan-ru (b.1954). His life journey is now a somewhat familiar story
of the generation of Chinese artists in the late twentieth century...
of a childhood in music, of being sent to forced labor camp as a
teenager, of being a professor under the communist regime, of getting
away to New York and establishing a life there. The earliest piece
presented, 'Yi Feng' (Lost Style) was written for his student, Frank Su
Huang, in Shanghai in 1983. Its premiere caused a scandal and was
denounced. Even today, 25 years later, the raw power and terrifyingly
deep explosions in sound of the cello tuned in fourths down an octave,
evoke an avant-garde in response to a world of imposed order. 'Wrong,
Wrong, Wrong!' was written in 2006 for Gan-ru's friend and
collaborator, Margaret Leng Tan. It is a Peking Opera-style voice
setting for a poem from 1155 in which the woman (who was wronged)
leaves nothing left behind in expressing her anguish. This melodrama is
crooned, screamed, uttered, cajoled, hummed, whispered, wept and sung
by the inimitable Ms. Tan, who also accompanies her self with an
ensemble of toy instruments that can be found in most Chinatowns. 'Four
Studies for Peking Opera' (2003) is a serious and recognizably
traditional essay in the canon of piano and quartet literature. It is
in four movements -- Prologue, Aria, Narrative, and Clown Music. The
piano serves primarily as an incarnation of the percussion section for
the Peking Opera, and is variously prepared to render gongs, cymbals,
wood blocks, zithers and so on."

ERIK SATIE - Avant-Dernieres Pensees: Selected Piano Works v.1
(LTM/Salon 2501; EEC) LTM is proud to present a new CD in our series by
visionary French composer Erik Satie (1866-1925), following the success
of previous releases including Vexations, Socrate and Dada Works, which
present selected Satie recordings with explicit links to the
unconventional, the mystic and the avant-garde. Avant-Dernieres
Pensees: Selected Piano Works features several of Satie's best known
compositions, including the famously poised Trois Gymnopodies, all six
haunting Gnossiennes and Je te veux, as well as more experimental
pieces such as Descriptions automatiques, Avant-dernieres pensees and
Sports et divertissements, an extraordinary collection of 21 miniatures
from 1914 with illustrations by Charles Martin. Also included is
Satie's single-act, neo-Dada lyric comedy Le Piege de Medusa,
comprising 'seven tiny dances for Jonah the Monkey' and illustrated by
the Cubist painter Georges Braque. The 46 pieces on this 72 minute CD
are performed by pianist Bojan Gorisek. The booklet includes archive
images and detailed liner notes by James Hayward. Also available by

FROM BRUSSELS WITH LOVE [V.A.] - From Brussels With Love (LTM 2479;
EEC) 19 tracks. LTM is proud to announce the very first CD release of
the classic 1980 compilation album From Brussels With Love, also the
debut release from chic Belgian indie label Les Disques du Crepuscule

celebrated Factory Records roster. Then, as now, the contributing
artists include Gavin Bryars, Harold Budd, Dome, The Durutti Column,
John Foxx, Martin Hannett, Richard Jobson, Bill Nelson, New Order and
Michael Nyman. The programme also includes extended interviews with
Brian Eno and iconic French actress Jeanne Moreau. Writing in NME in
1980, journalist Paul Morley praised From Brussels With Love thus: This
is a reminder - without really trying, without being obvious - that pop
is modern poetry, is the sharpest, shiniest collection of experiences,
is always something new." And according to Dave McCullough in Sounds:
"This tape, a long mysterious piece of collective modern overdrive,
points to a future somewhere." This new CD edition has been digitally
remastered from the original master tapes, and features 75 minutes of
material. Most of the tracks featured here STILL remain unavailable
elsewhere. For reasons of space just one has been deleted from the

WILLIAM BASINSKI - El Camino Real ('2062' 703; USA) "Hypnotic new

from the archive. Premiered at Bleeding Edge Festival, Montalvo Arts
Center, August 2006."

ASMUS TIETCHENS & RICHARD CHARTIER - Fabrication [2 CD set] (Die
Stadt 99; Germany) "The first collaboration by these two renowned sound
artists. Fabrication saw its beginning during the production of
'Re-Post-Refabricated,' a project in which artists were selected by
Richard Chartier to rework/create new works from his 1998 CD
Postfabricated for its reissue in 2003. As it was intended as an open
project, Asmus Tietchens continued to explore the source materials and
suggested further formal collaboration. This evolved into the
collaborative work Fabrication. The CD comes in a full color 4-panel
digisleeve with artwork and designed by Chartier. The first 500 copies
incl. a bonus CD feat. the complete material created by Tietchens from
Postfabricated entitled 'Post-Fabrication.'"
2 CD set for $30
ASMUS TIETCHENS - Notturno (Die Stadt 102; Germany) "Tenth part in the
ongoing re-release series of all early Tietchens albums between
1980-1991. Notturno was originally released by Spanish label Discos
Esplendor Geometrico in 1987 and also by Barooni on CD in 1992.
Remastered version in a first edition of 600 copies in jewel case with
full color artwork and poster booklet also featuring the original front
and back cover.
By the time Studie fur Klavier (Formen Letzter Hausmusik, DS84) was
released, it actually wasn't my first attempt to use the piano as a
sound source. Various pre-studies came before this, but all which
either were not characterized as such in their title or simply didn't
make it onto record. I was intrigued by the great range of sounds it
offers in general, but also by the multiple possibilities to produce
sounds inside of the piano. Of course I was fully aware that these
techniques had already been used by other composers like Henry Cowell
and John Cage in the past. Not only could I make use of a grand piano
in 1986, I also had the technical equipment at hand which didn't leave
nothing to be desired. I wasn't quite precise calling these pieces
Studien fur Klavier (Piano) by the way, as I was actually using a
flugel (grand piano). I began preparing the strings in an almost old
fashioned way, also producing sounds with unusual aids (electric gastr
beater, wire brush, coins and others). Then in another step, with the
help of the studio, I carefully started working on the recorded sounds.
While doing this, I wasn't even afraid of using some good old
avant-garde tricks, by the way. But I won't tell."
CD $22
ELECTRIC LUCIFER [BRUCE HAACK] - The Electric Lucifer (Omni 110;
Australia) "Bruce Haack's The Electric Lucifer is rightly considered
one of the masterworks of 20th century electronic music. Originally
recorded in 1968-69 (released in 1970) it's an eminently listenable
work where pop-psychedelia and Moog/musique concrete sounds coalesce.
Acclaimed when it was its originally released ( as one of Rolling
Stone's favorite albums of 1970) yet unavailable for over three
decades, The Electric Lucifer is presented here for the first time on
CD."
CD $18
KAWABATA MAKOTO - Hosanna Mantra (Important 152; USA) "Inspired by
Popol Vuh and originally released in a tiny pressing of 550 on vinyl
from the inimitable Acid Mothers Temple front man. Guitarist,
violinist, performer on numerous traditional instruments, composer,
leader of the Acid Mothers Temple, Kawabata Makoto expresses in this
solo performance all his mantric cosmical vocations and spins them into
space sonorities! He took inspiration from the Popol Vuh album of the
'70s Hosianna Mantra, during his visit to A Silent Place headquarters
in late winter 2006. In a sunny Sunday noon spent in the country-side,
eating and drinking Apulian specialities and listening to some great
experimental records, Makoto and his Italian friends Pierpaolo and
Pasquale, took the decision to start this cooperation. A few days
later, back in Japan, Makoto recorded the Hosanna Mantra album at the
Acid Mothers Temple between March 12th and 13th, using electric guitar,
bouzouki and sitar. The result is this new fantastic sound coming from
the cosmos. A simple gem of crystalline beauty."
CD $14
ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB - Neon Pibroch (Important 155; USA) "Neon Pibroch is
dedicated to the memory of Textile Records founder, Benoit Sonnette.
Astral Social Club is the current project of Neil Campbell, formerly of
Vibracathedral Orchestra, Sunroof!, A Band and many more. Campbell has
been active since the early '80s, and The Wire magazine has said that,
along with his friends Richard Youngs and Matthew Bower, he 'provided
the map co-ordinates for much of what passed for a post-punk UK
underground during most of the '80s and '90s.' Campbell's approach as
Astral Social Club could be seen as both a continuation and a refutal
of his work with Vibracathedral Orchestra -- a continuation in that it
continues the quest into the unknown stellar regions of improvised
drone-based music, and a refutal in its espousal of most of the
elemental organic rock modes that made that band so special. The focus
here is more on alien electronics and overloaded loop disorientation,
sometimes even working with sounds more readily associated with the far
end of dance music to produce a truly vast 21st century psychedelic
sound."
CD $14
ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB - Super Grease (Important 156; USA) "Super Grease is
a limited edition of 500 vinyl-only release from Vibracathedral
Orchestra /Sunroof!/A Band member, Neil Campbell. This is a companion
release to Astral Social Club's Neon Pibroch CD, also on Important."
LP $17
BLACK MAGIC DISCO - Black Magic Disco (Important 152; USA) "Black Magic
Disco is the new all-star band featuring Tom Greenwood (Jackie-O
Motherfucker), Maurizio & Roberto Opalio (My Cat Is An Alien) and
Ramona Ponzini (Painting Petals On Planet Ghost, Praxinoscope). The
project was born out of an idea from Tom Greenwood, leader of the
avant-folk-blues ensemble Jackie-O Motherfucker (JOMF), who invited
Maurizio and Roberto Opalio, aka the Italian improv duo My Cat Is An
Alien (MCIAA), and their close collaborator Ramona Ponzini (also
involved with the two brothers in the projects named Painting Petals On
Planet Ghost and Praxinoscope, as well as in the new collaboration with
Z'ev) to perform with him for two months of touring throughout all
Europe in May/June 2005. As one can imagine, the result was killer. The
music which came out of the live performances was totally explosive,
combining Ramona's Japanese vocals & hypnotic chimes with
Greenwood's psych-blues guitar attitude & wild turntablism, over
MCIAA's alien cosmic flux of electric guitars, space toys &
percussions, creating a still-unheard mixture of sounds unifying
archaic & post-modern, Western & Eastern, sky & earth. This
debut CD represents a unique chance to experience almost 80 minutes of
that pure and magic live action, divided in four long tracks taken from
the original live recordings."

MS. ANAT COHEN HAS BEEN GATHERING A GREAT DEAL OF PRAISE FROM THE N. Y.
TIMES & OTHER PUBLICATIONS IN RECENT TIMES. HERE ARE FOUR OF HER
FINE DISCS, BEING OFFERED FROM US FOR THE FIRST TIME:
ANAT COHEN & ANZIC ORCHESTRA With AVISHAI E COHEN/TED NASH
- Noir (Anzic; USA) The Anzic Orchestra is no ordinary ensemble but an
array of genuine all-stars, distinguished by an unusual combination of
instruments. Oded wanted to challenge himself, and he has succeeded in
finding his own sounds. "Anat and I have shared many musical moments
over the years, and I could not have asked for a more inspiring muse,"
he told me. "Bringing the arrangements to life with this extraordinary
group of musicians was thrilling. This project has been a joy, and I am
honored to be a part of it." His settings for Anat always enhance the
soloist, creating a gorgeous tapestry of sounds. The textures are fresh
and original, and those terms also apply to Anat.
Most young musicians, no matter how gifted, tend to reflect their
influences, but Anat has found her own distinctive voice, on all her
instruments. She never plays to the gallery; even her high notes are
not for show, but part of the musical message. There are not many
musicians on today's scene who communicate such genuine joy in what
they do; Branford Marsalis recently commented that young musicians lack
charisma. Maybe he hasn't heard and seen Anat. She loves to make music,
and while she is a physically expressive player, her moves, like her
music, are a true reflection of what she feels.
Unlike most Noir films, this wide-ranging musical trip will leave you
elated, happy and grateful that such beautiful, life-affirming music
can still be made in this world of ours. That we will hear more from
our protagonists is certain, and may it be soon! - Dan Morgenstern

ANAT COHEN - Place & Time (Anzic; USA) A talented saxophonist and
clarinetist originally from Israel, Anat Cohen has strong tones on
tenor, soprano and clarinet and is a creative improviser within the
modern mainstream of jazz. She contributed six excellent originals to
her debut recording including a few wistful ballads and the somewhat
heated "87 North." Her clarinet playing on "Veinte Anso," an
immediately recognizable Cuban melody taken here as a tango, is
charming. Her quartet, which teams her with the versatile and
supportive pianist Jason Lindner, is expanded on four numbers that add
her brother Avishai Cohen (no relationship to the famous bassist) who
contributes some effective trumpet. With the Cohens sharing the front
line and Lindner dropping out, they re-create the sound of the Gerry
Mulligan Quartet on "As Catch Can" (even if tenor is substituted for
Mulligan's baritone). The other songs are generally more exotic,
displaying Anat Cohen's interest in Latin music and her Israeli
heritage. All in all, this is a very impressive debut. - Scott Yanow /
AMG
CD $16
ANAT COHEN - Poetica (Anzic; USA) Anat plays clarinet exclusively on
Poetica and is joined by a great jazz trio of pianist Jason Lindner,
bassist Omer Avital and drummer Daniel Freedman plus a string quartet.
CD $16
WAVERLEY SEVEN [ANAT COHEN/AVISHAI E COHEN/JOEL FRAHM] - Yo! Bobby [2
CD set] (Anzic 7101; USA) Waverly Seven recaptures an era in American
popular culture when an outstanding instrumentalist could be a pop star
no less than a vocalist; when headlining singers were expected to be
complete musicians and instrumentalists were expected to be
entertainers.
YO! BOBBY is evidence that this performance ethic hasn't entirely been
lost to time. The members of the band revel in the joy that comes from
the combination of jazz, showmanship and the Great American Songbook.
The band lineup includes saxophonists Anat Cohen and Joel Frahm,
trumpeter Avishai Cohen, keyboardists Jason Lindner and Manuel Valera,
who share duties on various keyboards (piano and Wurlitzer electric
piano), bassist Barak Mori and drummer Daniel Freedman. Scott Robinson
(Baritone Sax) and Vic Juris (Guitar) make guest appearances.

WE CAUGHT CHICAGO SAX GREAT DAVID BOYKIN WITH NICOLE MITCHELL'S BAND AT
THE VISION FEST LAST WEEK AND WERE KNOCKED OUT BY HIS PLAYING. WE GOT A
FEW DISCS FROM HIM FOR YOU TO CHECK OUT:
THE DAVID BOYKIN EXPANSE - 47th Street Ghost (Dreamtime 3;
USA) Like his hometown compatriot Ken Vandermark, saxophonist David
Boykin is beginning to showcase the true depths of his musical
interest, from his two Outet records that revealed his devotion to
intricate dynamics, group interplay, and structured improvisation to
his fiery duet record with percussionist Bakari Davis to this new band,
the Expanse. While artists such as Courtney Pine and Steve Coleman have
touched upon the jazz world in the same way Boykin has, neither has
reached its deepest well of expression. The David Boykin Expanse is a
quintet that also features Marquecia Johnson on vocals in some places.
The playing is very much in the Strata East vein -- full of soul and
bluesy accents while remaining spiritually exploratory and skirting the
modal edges. The title track with the wraparound piano solo by Jim
Baker and its contrapuntal harmonic response by Boykin is almost
revelatory in its instinctive intimacy. The staccato flash of "Circus,"
with its dueling reeds and woodwinds (courtesy of Boykin and flutist
Nicole Mitchell) is utterly engaging in the same way Rahsaan Roland
Kirk's Rip, Rig and Panic album was: The lid is off on the solos, the
swinging is hard and true, and the spirits are out to play with the
rhythmic and harmonic point spreads. The sheer musical sophistication
of Boykin's vision, combined with his soulfully enthusiastic approach
and a crack band, makes this a necessary addition to the new jazz
catalog. - Thom Jurek / AMG
CD $15
DAVID BOYKIN - The Eye of the Beholder (Dreamtime Records 006; USA) An
incredible solo sax offering featuring Chicago reeds hero David Boykin
on B-flat clarinet and soprano sax. This recording was taken from a duo
performance of a dancer, Asimina Chremos, with Mr. Boykin on his two
reed instruments. It does have a live and somewhat fragile, distant
sound. David plays with a high-toned, bird-like sound on "Cast Spells",
slowly twisting his notes into fragments. Boykin has a unique,
alien-sounding tone that is most communicative, yet is not very
melodic. We hear the sound of wind rushing around his clarinet or
soprano sax at times, adding some natural echo to his sound. When he
switches to soprano sax on "With a Gaze", he plays layers of lines that
have a shimmering, hypnotic effect and concludes with some astonishing
multi-phonic streams. A healthy dose of intense music for some intense
times. - BLG
CD $15
DAVID BOYKIN - The NextSpiritMental Musics of Saxophonist David Boykin
(Dreamtime 17620; USA) This duet album between saxophonist and
clarinetist David Boykin and percussionist Bakari Davis is perhaps
Boykin's most striking and personal statement to date. Boykin is a
serious person and player; he takes his position in Chicago's AACM
without a hint of levity. The five tracks here, totaling just over 40
minutes, reveal the breadth and depth of Boykin's mastery of the tenor
saxophone. Here are bleating runs through scales and pitches, harmonic
extrapolations, and contrapuntal improvising that is knotty with
complexity, all-out blowing, and hyper-rhythmic breathing techniques.
In a spirit that evokes John Coltrane's Interstellar Space (though
Davis is certainly not Rashied Ali), the expression here is quite
simply to remove the separation of the time-space continuum between
past and future. Boykin calls out to the ancestors of the music and his
heritage while reaching a whole step forward in an attempt to engage
the emerging culture of the new jazz that comes out of his own
generation of players -- particularly in his native Chicago.
Interestingly, the most notable track here, "Black Magic," is also its
shortest. Evoking Roscoe Mitchell's "The Maze" and "SII Examples,"
Boykin pushes the tension limits of his embouchure, the multiphonics
invention of previous innovators (he can get three notes at a time from
the tenor in different tonalities), and the real-time dynamics of his
movement around the horn, while Davis holds a backdrop, a net with lots
of holes to jump through and knot over. It's one of the most
breathtaking uses of four minutes and 38 seconds in free jazz history.

BRUCE LEE GALLANTER REVIEWS RECENT RELEASES:
WARREN SMITH - Natural / Cultural Forces (Engine 023; USA)
Featuring Tom Abbs on bass, Andrew Lamb on tenor sax, Mark Taylor on
French horn and Warren Smith on drums & direction. Mr. Smith tells
us that each piece was inspired by Duke Ellington, animals in the
natural environment or geographical locations. "Pyramid" is an
epic-length piece that was inspired by the pyramids and has an ancient
sound. Eerie bowed bass, a whistle and the dark sounds of tenor sax and
French horn inhabit this somber terrain. Warmly and closely recorded,
there are series of duos that follow one another most organically and
evolve into slow-burning quartet sections. Warren Smith is one of the
most diverse and creative percussionists to emerge from New York for
the past forty years and can be heard on jazz, classical, rock and folk
sessions, perfect for each one. He switches effortlessly between styles
and genres and helps bring focus to this entire session. "American
Flamingo" is a thoughtful, free duo for tenor sax and drums and tells a
good story. Warren plays marimba on "Taurus at Pasture", which is a
slow and dreamy duo with Taylor's French horn. Warren plays tympanis on
the suspense-filled "Epicenter", another duo with Tom Abbs' haunting
bowed bass. "El Yunque" is a superbly recorded solo marimba and
percussion piece that closes this disc a subtle ethnic flavor. Great
stuff. - BLG

PAUL STEINBECK - Sun Set (Engine 022; USA) Featuring Malachi Thompson
on trumpet & flugelhorn, Chris Washburne on trombone &
didgeridoo, Paul Steinbeck on acoustic bass, percussion & all but
one of the compositions and Warren Smith on drums, vibes &
percussion. I hadn't heard of (currently) NY-based bassist &
composer, Paul Steinbeck, before this, but I do know of the other
members of his fine quartet. Chicago-based trumpet hero, Malachi
Thompson, passed away in 2006 and had some ten discs out on Delmark and
once played with the Sun Ra Arkestra. Chris Washburne has worked with
Roswell Rudd, Anthony Braxton and Gunther Schuller & currently
teaches at Columbia University. Warren Smith is still one of the most
diverse and creative percussionists to emerge from NY in the past forty
years.
"Fredology" opens this disc with a great funky groove and a slow,
spacey mid-section. The title piece features Chris on didgeridoo and
has a ritualistic vibe when it begins. "The Blue Devils & The Holy
Ghost" has a fine, bluesy, laid-back groove and some righteous horns.
This entire disc has an earthy, almost New Orleans-like vibe, with
Paul's bass and tunes at the center of everything. Born horns play a
variety of close-knit harmonies and uplifting arrangements that had me
humming along consistently. There also pieces that consist of just
Paul's bass playing with Warren's percussion just setting up a groove
or creating a contemplative mood. There is great feeling to each of the
12 tracks here, a joyous, festive vibe that makes one want get up and
dance at times. - BLG
CD $8
PAUL STEINBECK - Three Fifths (Engine 015; USA) Featuring Niko Higgins
on alto & soprano saxes, Andrew Lamb on tenor sax, flute &
mismaar, Paul Steinbeck on bass & bamboo flutes, Andrei Strobert on
congas & percussion and Warren Smith on drums, mbira &
percussion. This Mr. Steinbeck second disc for the Engine label (from
2005) and was recorded by percussionist Andrei Strobert who passed away
in 2006. I am now familiar with all of the players here except for
saxist Niko Higgins. Paul's strong bass and writing stands at the
center of each piece here. The opening tune sets the mood with that
righteous bass-led groove and both percussionists swirling around him
accented by a whistle. I love the way Steinbeck writes these tunes with
those great Afro-pop melodies/grooves. Oh yeah, get down make it funky!
Each one has a most memorable groove giving each sax a chance to play
their feisty solos. "I Am Your Host" begins with Warren Smith setting
up the groove on an mbira (African thumb piano) as Niko plays some
poignant alto sax, eventually joined by Andrew's equally righteous
tenor. Although the percussion and bass are quite minimal, they
establish a fine laid back groove throughout this entire long work.
Every piece on this disc makes one feel good, helping us to sway to
that infectious beat, as subtle as it may be. - BLG

CECIL TAYLOR TRIO w/ WILLIAM PARKER & TONY OXLEY - 2 T's for a
Lovely T [10 CD Set] (Codanza 1; UK) The Feel Trio is Cecil Taylor on
piano, William Parker on contrabass and Tony Oxley on drums! Some say
this is master avant-jazz piano legend Cecil Taylor's best trio and
they just might be right! This incredible box set came out last year
and was nearly impossible to find, but is finally here for us Cecil
Taylor fan-addicts to savor. This immense ten cd box includes ten sets
from five nights at Ronnie Scott's club in London during a week in
1990. Each is a marvel of creative spirits, intense playing and
unlimited resourcefulness. All three members of the trio are in
constant flight as the navigate the currents together. This is
edge-of-your-seat excitement with the adrenalin rush of a roller
coaster ride, waves of fear and dizziness keep the heart and mind
racing from one precipice to the next. It doesn't get any better than
this!

MICHAEL GARRICK With DAVE GREEN/COLIN BARNES - Moonscape (Trunk 022;
UK) Originally privately pressed in 1964 in an edition of just 99
copies, Moonscape is possibly the most rare, most desirable and
certainly most valuable modern British jazz record ever made. One of
the super-scarce 10" originals could cost you L1500-L 2000 ($4000!!!)
in mint condition. This is the first time Moonscape has had a proper
release. Recorded in London in 1964, Moonscape is pianist and modern
British jazz legend Michael Garrick's first album. Until now, and for
99 obvious reasons, very few people have ever heard this stunning lunar
jazz. As interest in modern British jazz and Michael Garrick has
increased over the last decade, this recording has gained almost
mythical status, with possibly only two copies coming to market in that
time. Moonscape is a solid keystone in the development of Britain's
jazz sound, with a slightly floaty, drifting essence to the music, and
an early British first foray into "The New Thing" -- the free jazz
sound, even though the steps here are tentative and a touch naive.
Highlights on such a short album are frequent, and current Trunk
favorites include the awesome and blissfully sad "Sketches Of Israel,"
and the complex 6/8 trip "Man Have You Ever Heard." This is British
modern jazz at its very best. Even though the space race had not really
begun by 1964, and man was still a full five years away from a
moonwalk, Garrick was no doubt onto something here, his prescient view
of sound, jazz and space predating the rush of international cosmic
jazz that punctuated the late 1960s and early 1970s. So, welcome at
last to Moonscape, and thank heavens there are more than 99 copies this
time around.

BLOSSOM TOES [BRIAN GODDING/JIM CREGAN/BRAIN BELSHAW/KEVIN WESTLAKE] -
We Are Ever So Clean (Sunbeam 5035; UK) Released at the height of
flower power in1967, 'We Are Ever So Clean' is the first record by the
UK's Blossom Toes, widely considered to be the finest pop-psych album
ever recorded. Produced by Giorgio Gomelsky (discoverer of The Rolling
Stones and The Yardbirds), it's a fascinating amalgam of whimsical pop,
music hall humor and acid rock. Much-bootlegged over the years, this is
its first official reissue, timed to coincide with its 40th
anniversary. Produced with the band's full involvement, it's presented
with no fewer than ten bonus tracks, encompassing non-LP singles,
demos, out-takes and live performances, and comes complete with a
full-color 12-page booklet incorporating many rare photographs and a
comprehensive band history, as well as an introduction from the band's
leader, Brian Godding.

BLOSSOM TOES [BRIAN GODDING/JIM CREGAN/BRAIN BELSHAW/KEVIN WESTLAKE] -
If Only For A Moment (Sunbeam 5036; UK) Two years after their brilliant
pop-psych debut, 1967's We Are Ever So Clean, Blossom Toes unleashed
this extraordinary fusion of acid rock and prog, emphasizing how far
they'd come since the summer of love. Characterized by complex song
structures and memorable guitar solos, and featuring a guest appearance
on sitar from U.S. folkie Shawn Philips, the album has gone on to
become a major cult favorite. Heavily bootlegged over the years, this
is its first official reissue. Produced with the band's full
involvement, it comes with seven bonus tracks, encompassing non-LP
singles, demos, out-takes and live performances, as well as a
full-color 12-page booklet incorporating many rare photographs and a
comprehensive band history, as well as an introduction from the band's
leader, Brian Godding.

B.B. BLUNDER [BLOSSOM TOES: BRIAN GODDING/KEVIN WESTLAKE/BRAIN BELSHAW
With JULIE DRISCOLL [TIPPETTS]/MICK TAYLOR/NICK EVANS /MARC CHARIG] -
Worker's Playtime (Long Hair 046; EEC) "Often regarded as Blossom Toes
3rd album, this is the most underrated album of the early '70s (1971).
So, it was not really a surprise, that the first re-release of the
album on vinyl (on Decal) in 1989 was credited to Blossom Toes '70.
Brian Godding, Brian Belshaw and Kevin Westlake showed again their
great talent to create songs beside the mainstream but always melodious
and with clever lyrics. Great guitar work by Brian Godding and
impressive vocals dominate the music. A lot of guest musicians
supported the band, among others: Keith Tippett [credited as "choir"]
and Julie Driscoll, as well as Marc Charig, Nick Evans, Kevin Westlake,
Mick Taylor, Brian Auger, Chris Kimsey, Barry Jenkins, and Graham
Smith. Released for the first time on CD, the album was digitally
remastered and appears in a brilliant sound. It also comes with a
comprehensive booklet including full band story, lyrics and photos
never seen before, plus two bonus tracks."

MEIC STEVENS - Sackcloth & Ashes: The EPs, Volume 2 (Sunbeam 5033;
UK) An integral part of the Welsh music scene since the beginning of
the 1960s, Meic Stevens was a member of a group called Y Bara Menyn
(Bread And Butter) with Geraint Jarman and Heather Jones, and also sang
with a backing band called The Cadillacs. Following the rapturous
reception given to their first collection of Meic Stevens' ultra-rare
EPs, Sunbeam is delighted to present this follow-up, spanning the years
1969 to 1971. Featuring much material that has never been available on
CD before and complete with comprehensive sleevenotes, rare photographs
and an introduction by "the Welsh Bob Dylan" himself, this is a simply
essential purchase for all fans of acid folk and psychedelia.

MEIC STEVENS - Rain In The Leaves: The EPs, Volume 1 (Sunbeam 5021; UK)
This haunting collection proves once and for all why Meic Stevens is so
often called "the Welsh Bob Dylan." An integral part of the Welsh music
scene since the beginning of the 1960s, He was a member of a group
called Y Bara Menyn (Bread And Butter) with Geraint Jarman and Heather
Jones, and also sang with a backing band called The Cadillacs. As well
as gathering for the first time the ultra-rare EPs he recorded between
1967 and 1970 (Mike Stevens, Rhif2, Mwg and Meic Stevens), the package
comes complete with both sides of his 1965 debut single, detailed
sleevenotes, rare photographs and an introduction by the man himself,
making it an essential purchase for all fans of acid folk and
psychedelia.

BUNKY & JAKE [ANDREA SKINNER/ALLAN JACOBS] - Bunky & Jake
(Fallout 2051; UK) Andrea "Bunky" Skinner and Allan "Jake" Jacobs had
been fixtures of New York's coffeehouse folk circuit for years when
they finally made this debut album in 1968, which finally appears on CD
here. Having honed their talents alongside Bob Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim
Hardin, Richie Havens, John Sebastian and countless others, their music
is a winning combination of breezy tunes, sweet harmonies and tasteful
fuzz guitar, making it the perfect soundtrack to a mellow summer's
evening.
CD $16
REX HOLMAN - Here in the Land of Victory (Fallout 2053; UK) Bit-part
actor Rex Holman is perhaps better known to Star Trek and Monkees fans
than music enthusiasts, but connoisseurs of acid folk have long
treasured this, his sole album, which originally appeared in 1970 (when
he was already 42 years old). A hypnotic blend of melodic,
contemplative songs and philosophical lyrics, sung in Holman's
quavering voice (which has been compared to Tim Buckley's), set to
acoustic guitar, sitar and tabla, it's nothing short of an overlooked
minor classic, and is sure to appeal to fans of artists such as Damon,
Pat Kilroy and Mark Fry.
CD $16
CAROLINE PEYTON - Intuition (Fallout 2052; UK) Caroline Peyton had been
lead vocalist with cult rural jazz rockers The Screaming Gypsy Bandits
and released a challenging solo debut (1972's Mock-Up) before recording
this superb collection for a local Indiana label in 1977. Boasting an
eclectic blend of styles ranging from folk to funk, jazz to pop and
even disco, Intuition has attracted ever-greater interest in recent
years, being featured on compilations and championed by cutting edge
DJs. It makes its long overdue CD debut here, complete with
biographical liner notes, and is a must for all connoisseurs of '70s
singer-songwriting.
CD $16
VAL STOECKLEIN - Grey Life (Fallout 2050; UK) As leader of the
legendary Blue Things, Val Stoecklein needs no introduction to fans of
folk-rock and psychedelia. Stung by the band's failure and traumatized
by the collapse of a relationship, he channeled his sorrow into the
songs that make up 1968's Grey Life -- the only solo album he would
ever release. A nakedly emotional recording that has drawn comparisons
with the work of Skip Spence, Syd Barrett and Scott Walker, it makes
its CD debut here complete with both sides of its rare accompanying
non-album 45, making it a must for fans of classic singer-songwriting
